Eldoret is a town situated in the western part of Kenya, functioning as the capital of Uasin Gishu County. It is fifth largest urban area of Kenya, situated to the south of the Cherangani Hills, around 320 km northwest of the national capital, Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Eldoret is considered as the fastest developing town of the country, holding a population around 290,000 people. Eldoret hosts an international airport and also houses Moi University and a large traditional market. It is geographically positioned between 0°31′ N latitude and 35°17′ E longitude and its altitude varies between 2100 and 2700 meters.

 

History of Eldoret:

The name of Eldoret may be derived from the Maasai language term “eldore”, which means ‘stony river’, referring the hard banks of the nearby Sosiani River. Eldoret was established by the group of migrated people from South Africa in 1908 and it officially became a town in 1910 with the establishment of a post office.

The Eldoret International Airport is served by Fly540 with scheduled flights from Nairobi and seasonal flights from Kisumu and Lodwar.
