Choibalsan is the 4th biggest city of Mongolia placed at an altitude of 747 meters, about 664 kms east of national capital Ulan Bator. It is the capital city of Dornod Province and Kherlen is the administrative unit of Choibalsan City covers an area of 281 sq. km.

 

History of Choibalsan:

Before 1941, Choibalsan was known as Bayan Tu’men and later renamed as ‘Choibalsan’ in the memory of communist leader Khorloogiin Choibalsan.

 

Geography and Climate of Choibalsan:

Choibalsan placed between latitude 48°04′42″ in the north and longitude 114°32′06″ in the east. Choibalsan features a cold semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters.

 

Culture, Food and Shopping in Choibalsan:

The population of Choibalsan comprises of Halh Mongols, Buryats, Barga Mongols, and Uzemchin. Buddhists are higher in majority in Choibalsan along with minority of Christians, Hindus and Muslims. Tsagaan Sar is the major festival of the country and the locals of Choibalsan celebrates this festival with great enthusiasm by gathering together.

Meat and dairy products are common in the standard diet of Choibalsan and buuz, khuushuur, khorkhog and boortsog are famous eatables. The locals also give more importance to vegetarian food to maintain good health. The restaurants of Choibalsan serve tourists with European and Mongolian style.

The shops of Choibalsan offer tourists both traditional dresses and western countries dresses. Deel is a very popular traditional dress among the natives of Choibalsan and tourists can purchase from all the cloth shops of the city. Transportation in Choibalsan:

Choibalsan is served by Choibalsan Airport with frequent flights to Ulan Bator and Hailar, located 13 kms away from the centre of the city. Mongolian Airlines and Eznis Airways provide air services to and from Choibalsan. Bus is the primary option for transportation in Choibalsan and also the city has one railway station. Tourists can hire Taxi or Minibuses to move within the city.

 

Places to see in Choibalsan:

Numrug Preserve:

Numrug Preserve is spread over an area of 311,200 hectares with rich flora and fauna and water streams. This preserve houses snakes, moles, otters, brown bears, wild ducks, eagles, falcons, cranes, condors and reindeer.

 

Khalkhin Gol:

Khalkhin Gol is a war memorial site located on the banks of the river. The memorials were constructed in the honor of brave soldiers who were killed during Russian and Mongolian War during 1939.

 

Mongol Daguur:

Mongol Daguur is the reserve area spanning over 103,016 hectares and houses dense flora and fauna and migrated and aquatic birds.

 

Buir Nuur:

Buir Nuur is a stunning lake located in Dornod Province and is considered as one of the largest lakes in Eastern Mongolia. The lake is surrounded by the dense forest and grassland.

 

Ideal time to visit Choibalsan:

June and August is the best time to visit Choibalsan to enjoy the beauty of beautiful lake.
