Kibungo is a city and the administrative centre of the Ngoma District in the Eastern Province of Rwanda, situated around 40 km south of the provincial capital, Rwamagana and around 80 km southeast of the national capital, Kigali. Kibungo is a colorful city, well known for the beauties of 5 lakes located towards the east of the city. The city itself holds all facilities, including banks, university campus and hospital. Kibungo coordinates with 02°09′30″ S latitude and 30°32′45″ E longitude and covers an area of 43 sq. km. The elevation of Kibungo measures 1,820 meters.

 

How to reach Kibungo?

Like most cities and towns in Rwanda, Kibungo is also served by Kigali International Airport with scheduled flights from many global destinations like Douala, Dubai, Entebbe, Brussels, Amsterdam, Doha, Istanbul, Johannesburg, Mombasa, Addis Ababa and Nairobi. Taxis are generally gettable at the airport and also visitors can use pre-booked private transfer for comfort airport travel.

Kibungo is connected to Kigali through the highway B3, which also connects Kibungo to Nyakasanza in Tanzania.

Luxury buses are difficult to see in Kibungo, so visitors can consider minibuses for their local travel. Moto taxis are also common in Kibungo.

Kibungo Central Market is the main shopping point in Kibungo, offering a wide selection of local specialties like costumes, potteries, jewelry, leather bags and spices. Restaurants are limited in Kibungo.

What to see in Kibungo?

 

Kibungo Central Market:

The Kibungo Central Market is one of the highlights of Kibungo. The market itself is large, holding a wide range of shops with dozens of products ranging from handicrafts to jewelry to fruit and vegetables. Keep in mind, probably there is no credit card system, so, keep some local currency prior to reaching the market.

 

Akagera National Park:

Situated around 60 km away from Kibungo, the Akagera National Park spans over an area of 1,200 km², is located on the border of Rwanda and Tanzania. The park itself is rich in both flora and fauna species as well famous for trekking, hiking and other different outdoor activities. The beauties of the park can be explored best through a guided tour.

 

Kigali:

Kigali is the capital city of Rwanda, situated around 80 km northwest of Kibungo. The city is blessed with moderate climate throughout the year that is the main feature of the city, drawing all types of tourists for vacation. Other than Presidential Palace Museum and Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, Kigali gets cowded during the night with many clubs, casino and bars.

When to visit Kibungo?

Like the rest of Rwanda, from December to January and June to September is the best time to visit Kibungo when the weather will be dry and pleasant.

There are few hotels in Kibungo, limited to traditional options. So it would be better if visitors consider hotels in the capital Kigali, to have memorable hospitality services.
