History of Mayiladuthurai:

Mayiladuthurai gets its name from the Tamil word ‘Mayil’ meaning peacock. Goddess Parvati is worshipped as the main deity by the locals of the town. It is one of the 274 holy places mentioned by Saivite saints called as Nayanmars.

It is said that Mayiladuthurai existed during the time of Chola rule in 3rd century A.D. This region was ruled by Thanjavur rulers during 17th  & 18th centuries.
