Mayiladuthurai is a town located in Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu at a distance of 281 kms from Chennai and 70 kms from Thanjavur. History of Mayiladuthurai:

Mayiladuthurai gets its name from the Tamil word ‘Mayil’ meaning peacock. Goddess Parvati is worshipped as the main deity by the locals of the town. It is one of the 274 holy places mentioned by Saivite saints called as Nayanmars.

It is said that Mayiladuthurai existed during the time of Chola rule in 3^rd century A.D. This region was ruled by Thanjavur rulers during 17^th & 18^th centuries. Mayiladuthurai became a part of the British India rule in the year 1799 and continued to be under their rule till 1947 when India attained independence. Mayiladuthurai became a part of Nagapattinam district in the year 1991.
