Mayiladuthurai is a town located in Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu at a distance of 281 kms from Chennai and 70 kms from Thanjavur. The town is situated on the banks of river Kaveri and the entire region is bound by lush green paddy fields. Mayiladuthurai covers a total area of 11 sq kms and its elevation level is 178 feet above the sea level. History of Mayiladuthurai:

Mayiladuthurai gets its name from the Tamil word ‘Mayil’ meaning peacock. Goddess Parvati is worshipped as the main deity by the locals of the town. It is one of the 274 holy places mentioned by Saivite saints called as Nayanmars.

It is said that Mayiladuthurai existed during the time of Chola rule in 3^rd century A.D. This region was ruled by Thanjavur rulers during 17^th & 18^th centuries. Mayiladuthurai became a part of the British India rule in the year 1799 and continued to be under their rule till 1947 when India attained independence. Mayiladuthurai became a part of Nagapattinam district in the year 1991.

Mayuranathaswamy Temple:

This is one of the biggest temples located in Mayiladuthurai dedicated to lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati in order to undertake penance took the form of peahen, hence the place came to be called as Mayavaram. The temple is adorned with various paintings and sculptures depicting gods and goddess.

Ayyarapper Temple:

This is one of the ancient temple located in Mayiladuthurai dedicated to lord Shiva who is the main deity worshipped with utmost faith and devotion.
