Mayiladuthurai is a town located in Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu at a distance of 281 kms from Chennai and 70 kms from Thanjavur. The town is situated on the banks of river Kaveri and the entire region is bound by lush green paddy fields. Mayiladuthurai covers a total area of 11 sq kms and its elevation level is 178 feet above the sea level. The literacy rate is 80% and Tamil is the main spoken language of the locals staying in Mayiladuthurai. History of Mayiladuthurai:

Mayiladuthurai gets its name from the Tamil word ‘Mayil’ meaning peacock. Goddess Parvati is worshipped as the main deity by the locals of the town. It is one of the 274 holy places mentioned by Saivite saints called as Nayanmars.

It is said that Mayiladuthurai existed during the time of Chola rule in 3rd century A.D. This region was ruled by Thanjavur rulers during 17th  & 18th centuries. Mayiladuthurai became a part of the British India rule in the year 1799 and continued to be under their rule till 1947 when India attained independence. Mayiladuthurai became a part of Nagapattinam district in the year 1991.

The temple is located 15 kms away from Mayiladuthurai which has lord Vaitheeswaran as the main deity. Another attraction of this place is the Jatayu Kundam where bird Jatayu said to have attained Moksha.

The temple is located on the banks of river Kaveri and is considered to be one of the 108 Vaishnva Thirupathis. The main deity of this temple is Parimala Ranganathan who is an incarnation of lord Vishnu. One can see the lord resting in a reclining posture with four hands. The temple attracts many devotees all round the year.

Mayuranathaswamy Temple:

This is one of the biggest temples located in Mayiladuthurai dedicated to lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati in order to undertake penance took the form of peahen, hence the place came to be called as Mayavaram. The temple is adorned with various paintings and sculptures depicting gods and goddess.

Ayyarapper Temple:

This is one of the ancient temple located in Mayiladuthurai dedicated to lord Shiva who is the main deity worshipped with utmost faith and devotion. One can notice many carvings and inscriptions on the temple walls dating back to Chola dynasty. The temple attracts many tourists and devotees during Thula festival which is held in the month of October.

Karaikal:

Karaikal is known for its forts, rivers and temples is about 40 kms from Mayiladuthurai.

Thanjavur:

Thanjavur is known worldwide for its Bruhadeshwara temple which is known for their master architecture and true craftsmanship. Thanjavur is also famous for rivers, rice and paddy cultivation fields located along the Kaveri delta and is approx 70 kms from Mayiladuthurai.
