Tartagal is a city situated in the province of Salta in Argentina at 22°30′ S 63°50′ W. It is in the north of the province located around 350 km from Salta (provincial capital) and 1740 km Buenos Aires (national capital). Tartagal belongs to the General José de San Martín Department covering an area of 3,015 sq. km. at an elevation of 490 meters.

Tartagal is noted for its position as the 2nd largest natural gas reservoir of Argentina. Around 25% of the oil and 16% of the natural gas of Argentina is produced in the area of Tartagal.

 

History of Tartagal:

It is believed that, Tartagal got its name from tártago plant ‘Euphorbia lathyris’. Tartagal was founded as a town on June 13 1924 and it gained city status on September 22, 1949.

 

How to reach Tartagal?

Tartagal has its own airport named, Tartagal General Enrique Mosconi Airport placed 12 km south of city centre with limited connections.

Gobernador Horacio Guzmán International Airport is the closest major airport to Tartagal located at a distance of 280 kms and is served by Aerolíneas Argentinas and Andes Líneas Aéreas with flights to Buenos Aires.
