Rivne, also called Rovno is a city as well as the seat of Rivne Oblast (province) in Ukraine, covering an area of 58.24 sq. km. It is the site of many well constructed and preserved historic churches and monuments including the Church of the Assumption.

 

Geography of Rivne:

Rivne is situated in the western part of Ukraine between 50°37′ N latitude and 26°15′ E longitude, around 325 km west of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. Rivne experiences a moderate continental climate with warm summers and cold winters with average annual rainfall of 598 millimeters.

 

History of Rivne:

The history of Rivne dates back to 1283 when it was one of the settlements of the Principality of Galicia–Volhynia. Later it became a part of the Great Duchy of Lithuania in the 14th century and then came under the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1569. In 1793, the Russian Empire acquired Rivne, after the separation of Poland. Rivne once served as a capital of the German Ukraine between 1941 and 1944.
