The history of Grenada dates back to 1649, when the French settled on the island of Grenada as a first European who conquered it completely in 1654 and ruled until 1762, when it was captured by the British during the Seven Year War. Grenada finally was declared independent on February 7^th, 1974 under the chiefdom of Eric Gairy, nearly 200 years rule of British.

The building of the Grenada National Museum was initially established in 1704 by French during the colonial period, later British used it for many purposes such as women prison, warehouse and hotel. It was officially inaugurated as a national museum in 1976 and it exhibits about the history of Grenada. It is open from 9:00am–4:30pm (Monday-Friday) and 10:00am– 1:30pm (Saturday).
