Barinas is the capital of both Barinas State and Barinas Municipality in the west central Venezuela, situated around 555 km southwest of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. It serves as the headquarters of the National Experimental University of the Western Plains ‘Ezequiel Zamora’.

Geography of Barinas:

Barinas is situated between 08°38′ N latitude and 70°12′ W longitude at an altitude of 188 meters covering an area of 322.71 sq. km.

 

History of Barinas:

Barinas was initially founded by the Captain Juan Andres Varela on the decree of the governor La Grita Francisco de Cáceres on June 30, 1577 with name Altamira de Caceres. Barinas became the capital of the Barinas State during the Venezuelan War of Independence.

Barinas has its own airport situated around 3 km away from the heart of the city with connections to Caracas, Guasdualito and San Fernando de Apure, served by Conviasa and Avior Airlines.

Estadio Agustin Tovar;

Estadio Agustin Tovar is a football stadium with a capacity of 30,000 viewers, situated in the centre of the city. It was inaugurated on 25th of June 2007 and was designed by Ricardo Mazzei. Eye catching landscape.

 

Unellez Botanical Garden:

Situated within the National Experimental University of the Ezequiel Zamora, the Unellez Botanical Garden is home to a wide variety of animal and bird species including casmerodius albus,  Bubulcus ibis,  Buteo magnirostris tapirs, deer and wild pigs. It is open from 7.00 to 12.00 and afternoon from 13.00 to 15.00 (Monday to Friday). Prior permission is necessary.
