Acarigua is a city located in the Portuguesa State of northwestern Venezuela between 9°33′35″ N latitude and 69°12′07″ W longitude. The major landmarks in Acarigua are Estadio General José Antonio Paez, the Cathedral Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Corteza and Plaza del 5 de Diciembre.

Acarigua is home to many protected areas such as Balneario Sabanetica, José Antonio Páez Park, Parque Mittar Nakichenovich and Balneario el Mamón. The special species found in the protected areas are Thysania Agrippina (moth) and Saman (tree).

 

Geography of Acarigua:

The city of Acarigua covers an area of 175 sq. km at an elevation of 195 meters, is situated around 90 km northeast of Guanare, the capital of Portuguesa State and 350 km southwest of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela.

 

History of Acarigua:

Acarigua was founded on September 29, 1620 during the Spanish Colonial period. It served as the capital of Portuguesa State in the past.

Oswaldo Guevara Mujica Airport is the airport serving Acarigua with frequent flights to Caracas, operated by Avior Airlines, located 6 km away from the midpoint of the city. There are buses regularly plying between Acarigua and the state capital, Guanare every day between Acarigua and Caracas.
