Vieques or Isla de Vieques is an island belonging to Puerto Rico, situated around 13 km east of the mainland of Puerto Rico, at 18°07′ N 65°25′ W. It is internationally renowned for spectacular beaches such as Red Beach, Blue Beach and Green Beach.

 

Geography of Vieques:

Vieques is geographically one of the parts of Spanish Virgin Islands, measuring length of 34 km and width of 6 km with a total area of 348.15 sq. km. Isabel Segunda and Esperanza are the two major towns of the island.

 

History of Vieques:

Prior to the arrival of the Spanish, Vieques was inhabited by Native Americans and other indigenous people. The Spanish conquered Vieques during the early 16th century and ruled until 1898, when it was captured by the United States along with Puerto Rico Island, by defeating Spanish in the Spanish–American War.

Fuerte de Vieques:

Fuerte de Vieques gained place in the National Register of Historic Places list in 1977.

 

Punta Mulas Light:

Punta Mulas Light (Faro de Vieques) was a second lighthouse established on Vieques Island (first being Puerto Ferro Light). It was originally built in 1896 and now it exhibits the maritime history of Vieques in the museum.

 

Sun Bay Beach:

Sun Bay Beach is a splendid white sand beach located in the vicinity of Esperanza town. It is a perfect beach for the whole family, especially for children.
