Tokmok is an administrative town of Chuy province in Kyrgyzstan or the Kyrgyz Republic, one of the Mountainous land-locked, 15 CIS countries of Central Asia.  Tokmok is located towards North of Kyrgyzstan and to the East of the capital city of Bishkek.


Tokmok located around 800 meters above seal level on the border of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in the North.  Tokmok is located in the middle of the Chui river valley flowing to its North.  To the East of Tokmok is the Issyk-Kul province and to the South is the Naryn province and to the West is the Talas province with the province of Jalal-Abad to the Southwest.


Tokmok has pleasant and warm summers during the months of May to August with occasional rainfall and the night temperature are usually very low than the day temperature and chilly winters during the months of November to March.


History of Tokmok in Kyrgyzstan:


Tokmok was most sought after place for many rulers who fought wars to gain control of Tokmok during the mid centuries before it came under the control of the Kokand Khanate during the second quarter of the 19th century, before the Russians gained control of the region in 1860s.  Under the Russian rule Tokmok was a well developed town with glass manufacturers setting up their industries producing liquid glass in large quantities till the breakup for the Russian Confederation in 1991and the economy slowing down.

Food in Tokmok is mostly the typical Kyrgyz food of Beshbarmak dish and Kumi and Mksym as drinks.  The dairy products and meats of the animals reared are consumed in large number. The continental food stuff is served in hotels across Tokmok town.


Tokmok is made up ethnic population with majority Kyrgyz people with Russians and Uzbeks following in tow with Dungans speaking the Russian language next to Kyrgyz language.

Tokmok shopping is mainly for the local artifacts and the shydaks the local hand woven carpets and Kalpak the hat worn by the Kyrgyz people.


Tokmok has few sight seeing places like the Airplane monument in the city and one can visit the Ak-Beshim ruins and Burana Tower and other ancient artifacts that are stored in the museums which are around 10 km and 20 Km range around Tokmok town.

  • Ak-Behim: The ruins of the city of Turkic Khaganate that are around 10 Km from Tokmok.


  • Burana Tower: The remains of the ancient city of Balasgun and also the remains of the Silk Route monuments which is around 10 Km from Tokmok.
  • Chuy valley: The valley itself offers various places of tourist interests as the river Chuy is flowing to the North of Tokmok.

Tokmok is well connected to the capital city of Bishkek sited at a distance of 85 Km to its West by the main road A365 via the town of Yuryvka. The Eastern town of Balykchy on the Western periphery of Issy-Kul lake is around 110 Km from the town of Tokmok.  The city of Almaty across the Kazakhstan border to the Northeast is around 275 Km from Tokmok.  There is no rail network in Tokmok and by flight to reach Tokmok the airport at Manas, where international flights land, near to the city of Bishkek, at a distance of 115 Km is the nearest to reach Tokmok.
