Salt is a town in Balqa Governorate in Jordan and an ancient agricultural town, situated in west central part of Jordan. Salt is situated around 790 to 1100 meters above the sea level and surrounded by three hills is sited close to Jordan River. Economy of Salt mainly depends on agriculture products like olives, tomatoes, grapes & peaches.

Salt is surrounded by Ajloun, Jarash, Al Zarqa, Balqa, Amman, Naour and Sahab and it is situated at the distance of 30 Kms from capital of Jordan, Amman. Zip code of Salt is 19110 and coordinates are 32.0333° N, 35.7333° E.

 

History of Salt:

The region of Salt was established by Macedonian army, during the rule of Alexander the Great and was identified as Saltus in Byzantine times. The region was shattered by Mongols but it was renovated by Baybars I during 1260 to 1277 and it was the capital of Ottoman Empire but in the 1830’s, it was devastated by the Egyptian governor Ibrahim Pasha. During the late 19th century, Nablus expanded the trading route to Salt and from there the Salt region flourished in all segments.  Herbert Samuel, British Commissioner offered to develop the town and trade connections and later it was made the capital.

 

Tourism in Salt:

Tourists can enjoy various ideal sites of architecture and archaeological museum in the town. Tourists can view diverse ancient residents in the town built in local and European style of architecture. Salt is surrounded by the mountains and Jordan River Valley is located in the town which makes it more attractive place to visit and tourists came across breathtaking landscape of the town. Amman is located 30 Kms away from Salt town and it is also the major tourism hub in Jordan. Tourists can buy various Handicrafts from the town and there are number of Handicrafts Schools in the town and local cuisine of Slat is delicious.

By Road:

Salt is well connected through roads and travelers can get around the city by taxis and buses and buses ply from Salt to Amman city and to Balqa Governorate.
