Legnica is a town located in the south west part of Poland in Lower Silesian Region and spans an area of 56.29 square kilometers (21.73 square miles) and situated at normal elevation of 113 meters (371 feet) above the sea level. Kaczawa and Czarna Rivers flows through the town and the economy of the town is mainly based on copper and silver industries and KGHM Polska Miedz is one of the biggest companies in the world in production of copper and silver. Legnica is bounded by Milkowice, Kunice, Legnickie Pole, Lisowice, Prochowice, Budziwojow, Krotoszyce and Jawor and it is located at the distance of 435 kilometers from Warsaw, capital of Poland. Geographical coordinates of Legnica are 51.2083° N, 16.1603° E.

 

History of Legnica:

Legnica region was settled by Celtic tribes around the 5th century B.C and the town became the home of the High Dukes of Poland in the year 1163. During the Mongol attack in the year 1241, the town became battle ground and defeated the Czech troops but did not establish the colony in the region. Legnica became one of the fast developing cities in the world after the discovery of gold in the Kaczawa River during the 14th century but later was destroyed in huge fire. During the World War II the city was damaged partly but later the city grew rapidly.

Legnica Castle:

Legnica Castle is located at the distance of around 1.5 kilometers from heart of the city was the residence of renowned Silesian Dukes in the 1163 and the castle can be visited by the tourists during the summer season and it is worth visiting the castle in the town.

 

Lubiaz Abbot House:

Lubiaz Abbot House at present is converted into the museum of copper located around 1.5 kilometers from heart of the city is a baroque type of palace constructed in the 18th century and was established by Abbot of Lubiaz and at present one can see the permanent exhibition about the history of the copper and Legnica town.

 

Main Square:

Main Square in Legnica is one of the best places to know about the history of the Legnica surrounded by town hall, the arcaded tenement houses these buildings were damaged during the World War II but later it was restored to its previous charm.
