Gavar is the capital city of Gegharkunik region, Armenia.  It lies in the Armenian terrains. It has an altitude of 1,982 meters above the sea level. It was discovered by the emigrants that entered the city from Bayazet and titled it as “New Bayazit”. The main ethnicity of the populace here is Christianity. It is renowned for the eastern cuisine, fish, vegetables, different spices and their mixture. Kyavari Kyufta is the most popular dish in the town.

Tourist Attractions in and near Gavar

Sevan City

Sevan City just 35 km from the Gavar city is a renowned tourist attraction in Armenia. It is positioned in the Gegharkunik Province and sited on the north basin of Lake Sevan. It is the command center of the Gegharkunik Province. It houses the Sevan National Park.

Sevan National Park

The Sevan National Park positioned in Sevan city just about 40 km from Gavar. It was recognized in the year 1978 to shelter Lake Sevan and the areas in its vicinity.  The region encompasses 1501 sq. km about which 25000 hectares is the lakeside terrain. It is enveloped by the knolls of Sevan, Geghama, Areguni, Vardenis and Pambak.

Sevanavank

Sevanavank is positioned just around 25 km from the city of Gavar. It is an ethnic hub positioned in the peninsula at the north-west basin of Lake Sevan in the Gegharkunik Province, Armenia.  It houses two churches namely Surb Arakelots it literally means “Holy Apostoles” and Surb Astvatsatsin it literally means “Holy Mother of God.

Hayravank Monastery

Hayravank Monastery is positioned 9 km away from the city of Gavar.  It has a four sided central approach minster. It was constructed in the later part of the 9th century.  The cathedral has been renovated several times and has received additional chambers each a time it was renovated.

Getik State Reservation

It is found about 45 km from the Gavar city and was constructed in the year 1971. It was built to shelter the lush forest vegetation.

Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan is one of the biggest natural water lakes that have towering elevation in the entire globe. It is the biggest Lake in Armenia.  It has a height of 1,900 meters above sea level. It houses several beaches. It hosts the Island Monastery that has three cathedrals encompassed in it.

Best season to visit Gavar

Due to high elevation the climate during the summers will be pleasant and is the ideal time to visit Gavar. There is moderate rainfall in the monsoon season. The winter climate is mostly very cold.

Accessibility in Gavar

Public and private transportations operate buses from Gegharkunik prefecture to Gavar. Gegharkunik region is well connected by buses to the capital city Yerevan. Yerevan is approx 90 kms away and Kapan is sited about 270 kms from Gavar with best connectivity.
