Tichit, also spelled Tichitt, is a tourist favor village situated in the Tagant region in the south-central part of Mauritania, between 18°26′30″ N latitude and 9°29′30″ W longitude, towards the east of Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania. The village is famous among visitors for its vernacular architecture and there is also museum showcasing the archeological importance of Tichit and its nearby villages.

Tichit is a World Heritage Site, housing the West Africa’s oldest remaining archaeological settlements. The economy of Tichit is based on date farming.

 

History of Tichit:

According to the archeological findings found in the region, agropastoral communities lived around 2000 BC during the late Stone Age were the original founder of Tichit. Archaeologists P.J. Munson, S. Amblard and Augustin F.C. Holl claimed that millet was growing in the region during 2000 BC.

 

Connectivity to Tichit:

There is an airport in but flights are rare to see. The closest major airport to Tichit is the Nouakchott International Airport, which is the most important airport of Mauritania, situated around 700 km away from Tichit. This airport handles flights from Dakar, Gran Canaria, Madrid, Abidjan, Casablanca, Bamako, Brazzaville, Casablanca, Conakry, Algiers, Paris, Istanbul and other important African and European destinations.

There is no bus connection from Tichit to any other cities in Mauritania. So it is better to rent a 4×4 to travel Tichitt.

Upgraded shops are limited in Tichit but one can find some traditional shops in Tichit, where visitors can purchase typical old beads and grinding implements at affordable prices. Food corners are also less in number in Tichit.
