Sivakasi is a township in Tamil Nadu, India. It is very famous for its crackers and match box production. History of Sivakasi

The history dates back to the 15th century when it was under the control of Madurai sovereigns. Sovereign Harikeasri laid the groundwork of the Shiva shrine here. In the later years it was reconstructed under the supremacy of King Pandia. It is said that the place was blessed by the lingam and gained the title as Sivakasi. In the later periods the shrine was known as Kasi Viswanatha Swamy.

Panguni Uttiram fiesta is the foremost carnival in this shrine which is commemorated for 21 days.
