Split is a largest and renowned city in Dalmatian county positioned on the eastern coast of Adriatic Sea in Croatia country. Split is one of the oldest settlements in the country covers an area of 79.38 square kilometers (30.65 square miles) and positioned between Gulf of Kastela and Split Channel. The economy of the Split city is based on shipbuilding, fishing, University transportation, food, chemical, plastic, textiles and paper industries.

Split is bounded by Kastel Novi, Katel Sucurac, Solin, Klis, Mravince, Torgir, Podstrana and Stobrec and sited at the distance of 410 kilometers from Zagreb, capital Croatia. Coordinates of Split are 43.5000° N, 16.4333° E.

 

History of Split:

Greeks were the first to settle in the region and they built the Diocletian’s Palace, along the coast and trade was established between Illyrian and Greeks and during the Roman era, the region was rule by Roman Emperor who dominated the entire country and ruled until 476 AD before falling into the hands of Byzantine Emperor.

During the 7th century the region was ruled by Venetian Republic, the Kingdom of Croatia, and the Kingdom of Hungary and during the Hungarian civil war between King Sigismund and the Capetian House of Anjou of the Kingdom of Naples, lasted for nearly 20 years in which Naples sold the region to Venetian Republic in the year 1420 and rule the city for over 377 years from 1420 to 1797. At the end of First World War, Split was acquired by Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and later annexed by Italy and during the World War II, region came under the hand of Nazi Germany.

Diocletian’s Palace:

Diocletian’s Palace was constructed in the 4th century AD by Emperor Diocletian and the palaces is towards the south side of the peninsula that runs from the Dalmatian coast, four miles from Salona is renowned for architectural and cultural features in the country.

 

St. Duje’s Cathedral:

St. Duje’s cathedral is the oldest known church in the world constructed by Romans in the 305 AD and has gorgeous blend of Roman temple and Catholic Church and from top of the church one can view the stunning views of nearby islands and Marjan hill.
