Trogir city is situated between Croatian mainland and the Island of Ciovo is a historic and harbor town on the Adriatic coast in Split-Dalmatia County in Croatia. Trogir is known for shipbuilding from several eras and economy of the town is dependable on tourism, shipbuilding, fishing, and agriculture and due to its rich historical past and monuments the town is recognized under the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Trogir is surrounded by Marina, Seget Vranjica, Okrug Gomji, Kastel Novi, Plano and Vinisce and Arbanija and situated at the distance of 380 kilometers from Zagreb, capital of Croatia and coordinates of Trogir are 43.5169° N, 16.2514° E.

 

History of Trogir:

Trogir was founded by Greek colonist in the 3rd century BC and developed into the major port when Roman captured the town. The name was derived from Greek Word “tragos” which means male goat and became the significant town in the regions and in 1123, the town was completely destroyed by Saracens but recovered in 12th and 13th century. Cathedral of Trogir was constructed by Subic family was one of the prominent Subic’s construction in the town. In the year 1381, the town was ruled by Venice kingdom after the fall of the kingdom the Trogir town was acquired by Venetian in 1420 who ruled until 1797 and later was captured by Habsburg Empire and they ruled until the First World War (1918).

Chatedral of St Lawrence:

Chatedral of St Lawrence was constructed during the Greek and Roman rule in the town but the church was ruined in the 13th century by Venetian and the church is renowned for its Romanesque cathedral style and from top of the cathedral one can view the sight of the surrounding valleys and sea.

 

Radovan’s portal:

Radovan’s portal is the best portal and significant sculptor of Croatian medieval art and the sculpture was carved by Master Radovan.

 

Convent of St Dominic:

Convent of St Dominic is a monastery established in the year 1265, is one of the preserved monastery which was destroyed in the allied bombing of Trogir in 1944 but the valuable works of art are still preserved in the monastery.
