Portsmouth is the 2nd largest town of Dominica located at an altitude of 43 meters, about 45 kms from the national capital Roseau. It is the birthplace of Dominican politician, Roosevelt Douglas. The seaport of Portsmouth is located in Prince Rupert Bay. Portsmouth belongs to Saint John Parish.

 

Geography of Portsmouth:

Portsmouth is situated on the northwest coast of Dominica on the Indian River between 15°34′06″ N latitude and 61°27′23″ W longitude. It is surrounded by Cabrits National Park and Ross University School of Medicine which is one of the major educational institutions in Dominica.

 

History of Portsmouth:

Portsmouth served as the capital of Dominica in 1760 and in the same year malaria affected Portsmouth, because of this reason the capital was moved to Roseau.

It has good connectivity with Sint Maarten, Porlamar, San Juan, Antigua, Barbados, Sint Maarten, Saint Luc and other major Caribbean locations.
