Charles III William, Margrave of Baden-Durlach was the founder of Karlsruhe, founded on June 17, 1715. Karlsruhe Palace was also constructed during the foundation of city.

Karlsruhe is served by Baden-Airpark located about 40 km from the heart of Karlsruhe. Ryanair is a low-cost carrier serving Baden-Airpark with cheap flights to major European locations.

The major railway station of Karlsruhe is situated in the south of the city centre, served by ICE high speed trains with scheduled trains to most of the major German cities.
