Ilo is a port city as well as the capital of Ilo Province in Moquegua Region of Peru located 15 meters above the sea level, around 165 km southwest of Moquegua (regional capital) and 1175 km southeast of Lima (national capital).

Ilo is the largest city of the Moquegua Region covering an area of 295.6 sq. km. and it coordinates with 17°38′45.09″ S latitude and 71°20′43.13″ W longitude. Ilo lies north of the Atacama desert and experiences between 18° and 28° C temperature year around.

 

History of Ilo:

Ilo was inhabited by the Chiribaya civilization prior to the entry of the Spanish in the 16th century. Until the 20th century, Ilo was one of the major olive production areas of Peru.

 

How to reach Ilo?

Ilo is served by an airport with connection with Arequipa and Lima, catered by Peruvian Airlines but currently services are suspended.

So the closest working airport to Ilo is Crnl. FAP Carlos Ciriani Santa Rosa International Airport is placed in Tacna, around 150 km away from the centre of the Ilo city with connections to Arequipa and Lima, operated by Peruvian Airlines and LAN Peru.

There are buses frequently running between Ilo and Moquegua and cars and taxis are widely used for local travel.
