History of Mangalore

Mangalore the region is also associated on the historical account of great epic of Ramayana and Mahabharata. We can also come across its references from the history whereas several travelers from the region of Rome and Greece are also mentioned by dissimilar names. Early on the history of Mangalore was under the control of great rulers, like Chalukyas, Hoysalas and the Rashtrakutas. The Kadamba period was from the year 200 – 600 AD as it was their ruling period, while the capital of Alupa Empire was till the fourteenth century. By the mean time, Mangalore developed into a significant trade center, and the Persian merchants and travelers visit regularly.

Mangalore History

By the end of fifteenth century, Europeans began to visit Mangalore and shortly the city was originated under the power of foreign settlers, mainly by the Portuguese. In the middle of sixteenth century, the Portuguese had established to command the region of Mangalore, where the arrival of Roman Catholics and Goud Saraswat Brahmins following the battle between the Portuguese and the Marathas. Prior to the city under the control of Hyder Ali, the leader of Mysore, Mangalore was entirely controlled by the Keladi Nayaka territory who took the control of the city by conquering the Portuguese. 

In the eighteenth century, Mangalore was originated to be shifted between the power of the British East India Company and the Mysore sovereign Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, at last it went into the hands of the British subsequent to the death of Tipu Sultan in the fourth Anglo-Mysore conflict. The British occupied the headquarters of Canara district and started the development of city and infrastructural expansions. Almost immediately the city was entirely changed and it came out as a hub for education and trading. While the Canara district was divided into two separate districts and it was made as the head office of the South Canara.

Several messenger institutions were also started during the nineteenth century, which engaged considerably functioning in the division of education, health and communal welfare of the populace existing in the city. The British government positioned the city Mangalore on the railway map of India by linking it to the Southern Railway. The Municipal council was established in the year 1866 to furnish the speed to the development of city expansion. In self-governing India, Mangalore was shifted from the Madras Presidency to the Mysore State (later Karnataka) as an end result the States Reorganization Act of 1956. At present, the city is well-known worldwide as a chief center of commerce, business and Information Technology skills.
