History of Hong Kong:

In the year 1841 on January 20th, British forces captured the Island Hong Kong which was under the rule of Qing dynasty. An agreement was made between the Chinese ruler and the British Governor. Under the British rule the place Hong Kong prospered.

In 1898, the British obtained a lease for a period of 99 years for the adjacent land and island. Since then the boundaries of Hong Kong remain the same till today. During the invasion of the Japanese in the year 1941, the British lost Hong Kong to the Japanese. Hong Kong was under the control of the Japanese till 1945. Later Britain took control of Hong Kong.

The handing over of Hong Kong to the Chinese Republic took place on 1^st July 1997. This day saw the end of 156 years rule of the British over Hong Kong.

History of Guangzhou:

According to historians, Guangzhou was known as Panyu during ancient times. It came under the rule of the Qin dynasty. The Nanyue Kingdom, presently known as Vietnam country, was part of the Panyu territory in 206 B.C. Later in 111 B.C the Nanyue kingdom was conquered by Han dynasty. In 226A.D the locals changed the name of the place to its old name Guangzhou. This place was once an important port in the south of the country, where traders would arrive from the far Middle East by ships.

The year 1517 saw the arrival of the Portuguese traders in Guangzhou. Later in the 17th century, the Dutch gained supremacy and established their trade.

The year 1690, saw the arrival of traders from various companies located in Europe; Middle East and India arrive at the ports of Guangzhou. During the 18th century, the first war was declared against the trade of Opium. During this war the British captured Canton on 18 March 1841. Another battle was fought on May 1841 in Canton.

In 1918, the place was officially declared as Guangzhou. Panyu was declared a separate country. The year 1937 marked the beginning of the 2^nd Sino-Japanese War which lasted till the year 1945. In the year 2000, Panyu became part of Guangzhou.

History of Guilin

According to archeologists findings civilization existed along the banks of the river Li, in 314 B.C. In the year 111 B.C Guilin was under the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty. Later on the Tang and Song dynasties ruled Guilin. The trade flourished in Guilin under their reign and the city thrived prosperously. However the name of this place was changed to Guizhou.

Guilin formed the center of operation for the Northern Army headed by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The place got back the name Guilin in the year 1940.
