Guilin is sited on the Asian continent in the northeast region of the country, China. This place is located in the Guangxi province. When translated to English the word Guilin means ‘Forest of Sweet Osmanthus’. This place is also regarded as Oil Capital of the country. The geographical coordinates puts the place at 25⁰16’ N and 110⁰17’ E and spans over an area of 27,809 km²and located at an elevation of 153 meters above sea level. During summer season the average temperature is 28⁰C and in winter temperature drops to 7⁰C.

History of Guilin

According to archeologists findings civilization existed along the banks of the river Li, in 314 B.C. In the year 111 B.C Guilin was under the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty. Later on the Tang and Song dynasties ruled Guilin. The trade flourished in Guilin under their reign and the city thrived prosperously. However the name of this place was changed to Guizhou.

Guilin formed the center of operation for the Northern Army headed by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The place got back the name Guilin in the year 1940. During the year 1981, the place, Guilin became an important part of China with the State Council declaring special protection for specific locations and sites in Guilin.

People & Culture of Guilin

Due to the presence of Han community in large numbers in Guilin Southwestern Mandarin and Cantonese form of Chinese language are widely spoken among the locals. Apart from these languages Pinghua and Zhuang are the other forms of Chinese languages spoken in Guilin. Worshippers of the Christian religion form the minority community in Guilin.

Folk songs and music forms the integral part of the local culture.

The Li River

This river flows from Guilin to Yangshou and covering a distance of 80 km the place located around the river is filled with picturesque sceneries.

Yangshuo

Formed over 2000 years, Yangshuo is one of the oldest cities lying towards the southeast of Guilin at a distance of 66 km.

The Reed Flute Cave

Located on the border, towards the northwestern part of Guilin lies Guangming Hill where the reeds growing in these areas, can be made into flutes.

Elephant Trunk Hill

This hill rests near the confluence of the Yang and Li rivers. The hill is named because of its structure, representing that of elephant drinking water.

Seven Star Park

This park is situated near to the Li River in the east sector. Due to its appearance the park has earned the name Seven star park.
