Zuwara, also spelled Zuwarah and Zwara, is a tourist favor port city located in the northwestern part of Libya. Lying on the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea, Zuwara is blessed by spectacular beaches, which draw a substantial number of water sport lovers year round. Seafood is another most popular thing among both locals and visitors in Zuwara.

Zuwara is situated around 60 km from the Libyan border with Tunisia and around 100 km west of the national capital, Tripoli. Zuwara is the administrative centre of the Nuqat al Khams district, lying between 32°56′ N latitude and 12°05′ E longitude.

 

History of Zuwara:

According to the pre-historical records, Zuwara has been inhabited since the 11th century. The name Zuwara might be derived from the Zuwara Berber tribe, who are native to the area. Zuwara had seen the rule of the Italians in the first half of the 20th century and then it was the western outpost of Italian Libya.

 

How to reach Zuwara?

There is an airport in Zuwara but flights are not scheduled. The closest major airport to Zuwara is the Tripoli International Airport. This airport is situated around 120 km southeast of the midpoint of Zuwara and handles flights from/to Dubai, Istanbul, London, Rome and Madrid.

Zuwara has good road connectivity to all the major Northern Libyan cities including Tripoli, Benghazi and Misrata. The local transportation of Zuwara is catered by minibuses, rental cars and taxis.

 

Culture, Food and Shopping in Zuwara:

Like country, Zuwara’s population is also formed by a higher majority of Muslims, particularly Sunnis, who generally speak Zuwara Berber. English and Italian are also spoken but by few people.
