Orhei is a city situated in the district of Orhei in Moldova, around 40 km north of Chisinau, the capital of Moldova. Orhei is well known for its historical churches like St. Dumitru Church and the Russian Orthodox Church. The economy of Orhei is based on the emerging tobacco industry and wineries.

 

Geography of Orhei:

Orhei is geographically positioned between 47°23′ N latitude and 28°49′ E longitude, covering an area of 8,5 sq. km.

 

History of Orhei:

The name of Orhei is derived from Old Orhei, which was a medieval city on the Raut River. As like other Moldovan settlements, Orhei became the part of the Russian Empire in the year 1812. Following the World War I, Orhei came under the rule of the Kingdom of Romania and in 1940, USSR conquered Orhei along with other Moldovan cities and finally Moldova became independent with the dissolution of USSR in 1941.

The Chisinau International Airport is the main gateway for Moldova, located about 60 km away from the centre of Orhei. This airport operates flights from and to Athens, Bucharest, Frankfurt, London, Moscow, Rome, St. Petersburg, Vienna, Munich, Istanbul, Bologna and many other major European cities.
