Alajuela is a city in Costa Rica in Central America is the 2nd largest city after San Jose.  Alajuela has a total area of 3.43 square miles (8.88 square kilometers) is located at an elevation of 952 meters above the sea level in the Central Valley. Economy of the Alajuela depends on agriculture and cash crops and these products are exported to various countries and industries are being developed in the city that boost in the growth of the city. Alajuela is located at the distance of 21 kilometers from the capital of Costa Rica and coordinates are 10.0167° N, 84.2167° W.

 

History of Alajuela:

Before the settlement of Europeans the territory of Alajuela was ruled by Huetar Kingdom and inhabited by native tribes. In the year 1650, first Spanish settlement was established in the province and the first town hall was established in the year 1813 and named the city as Villa Hermosa and later in the year 1824 the city was renamed as Alajuela.

Poas Volcano National Park:

Poas Volcano National Park is situated at the distance of 27 kilometers from the heart of the city is an admired destination for national and international tourists where one can see into the hollow of an active volcano and the scent of the sulfur can be smelled from distant.

 

The Central Cathedral:

The Central Cathedral is located in the heart of the city and the historical cathedral constructed during the Spanish rule in the city is one of the beautiful churches located in front of central park.

 

Iglesia La Agonia:

Iglesia La Agonia was constructed in the year 1941 is one the major landmarks in the city visited by many domestic tourists throughout the year located 1.5 kilometers from middle of the town.

 

Juan Santamaria:

Juan Santamaria was a National Hero and a statue of Juan Santamaria is constructed in the Juan Santamaria Park and has a collection of cannons which dates back to 1860.

 

Climate in Alajuela:

Alajuela experiences tropical savanna type of weather with humid, rainy summer and dry winters and temperature typically varies from 17° Celsius to 30° Celsius throughout the year. Best time to visit Alajuela is from September to March.
