Yangon is situated in the Asian continent towards the west of Myanmar in Yangon State. Formerly known as Rangoon, it served as the capital city of Myanmar. Yangon Town in Yangon District is at a distance of 395 km from the capital city, Naypyidaw is hub for industries, tourism, media, real estate, trade and entertainment. Yangon district spreads over a total area of 10,170km2 and the geographical coordinates puts the place at 16048’ N and 96004’ E.

 

Climate in Yangon:

Yangon has tropical monsoon climate and remains dry most of the year and during summer season the average temperature is 350C and in winter temperature drops to 180C.

 

History of Yangon:

In the early 11th century, Yangon was known as Dagon.  Dagon was under the reign of the Mon dynasty from the period 1028 to 1043. The year 1755, witnessed the defeat of the Mon dynasty at the hands of the invading force of King Alaungpaya. The name of the place Dagon was later changed to Yangon. In the year 1824, a war was fought between the Kings army and the British. Eventually the British emerged victorious and took control of Yangon and ruled till the year 1826. This war is known in the history of Myanmar as the First Anglo-Burmese War. Later the British handed the entire welfare and administration back to the royals. However, another war known as the Second Anglo-Burmese war took place in the year 1852, wherein the British totally gained control over the entire region. Yangon then was declared the capital of the British annexed regions in Burma by the British. In the year 1885 another war known in Burma history as the Third Anglo-Burmese war took place against the British and they became rulers of the entire Myanmar.

During the Second World War the Japanese forces invaded Myanmar. After the end of the Second World War, the British regained control.

Another rail service known as the Yangon Circular Railway commutes passengers to places within Yangon region.
