Giridih is located in the Indian state of Jharkhand. Giridih forms the centre of operation for Giridih district.  The geographical coordinates puts the place at 24.180N and 86.30E. In summer season the temperature ranges from 23 0C to 37 0C and in winter the temperature ranges from 13 0C to 24 0C. Giridih is 224 meter above sea level.

History of Giridih

During the Pre-colonial period, dating to the 13th century, the locals residing in Jharkhand were unable to tolerate the harsh rules implemented by tribal chiefs. So they approached Raja Jai Singh Deo, who was the then ruler of Orissa to be their king. Raja Jai Singh Deo, in those days was well known, in providing a fair and just system throughout his kingdom. During his reign over Jharkhand, only the good tribal chiefs were spared and were called as Munda Rajas.

During the reign of the Mughals, Giridih was called as Kukara. With the fall of the Mughal power in 1765, came the rise of the British East India Company who ruled the Jharkhand state. The place, Giridih, witnessed many events contributing to the struggle of national freedom against the British.

In 1947, after India achieved Independence from the British Raj, Giridih became a part of Jharkhand state.

A 40 feet high stream of water flows down the falls from the overhead Ursi offering a magnificent picturesque scenery. This is located towards the east of Giridih at a distance of 13 km.

This park is home to forty varieties of migratory bird species. Safari rides on elephant and camel back are encourage in this park.

 

  • Madhuban

 

This place has a 2000 year old temple and is also one of the important Jain pilgrimage centers in Giridih. There is also a Jain museum depicting the various scriptures and monuments relating to Jainism.

 

  • Hari Har Dham

 

A 65 feet tall Shivalinga, which took thirty years to be created, rests at this place. Devotees throng this place in large numbers during Shravan Poornima.
