History of Galway:

Settlement in Galway began after the construction of Dún Bhun na Gaillimhe fort in 1124, by the King of Connacht and the fort was seized by Norman in 1230s and the city was granted the mayoral status by the English crown in the year 1484 and during the Middle Ages, the city was ruled by an Oligarchy of fourteen merchant families and city was loyal city to English crown during 16th and 17th centuries.
