Colonia is a city positioned towards the southwestern part of Uruguay in the department of Colonia and also called as Colonia del Sacramento. Colonia is one of the oldest cities in the department sited at an elevation of 89 feet (27 meters) above the sea level. Colonia is a World Heritage Site and economy of the city depends on textile production, tourism and free trade zone and city is home of number of government buildings. Colonia is surrounded by Tarariras, Nueva Helvecia, Juan Lacaze, Carmelo and San Jose de Mayo and located at the distance of 185 kilometers from capital of Uruguay, Montevideo. Coordinates of Colonia are 34.4714° S, 57.8442° W.

 

History of Colonia:

Colonia was established by Portuguese in the year 1680 as Clonia do Sacramento. Colonia was ruled by Portuguese, Spain, Liga Federal and Brazil and for many years the city was exchanged between Portuguese and Spain due to treaties such as ‘Treaty of Madrid’ and ‘Treaty of San Ildefonso’ and in the year 1816, Colonia came under the control of Brazil. Before the independence, Colonia was a town and after the independence in the year 1809 it was crowned with city status.

Colonia Lighthouse:

Colonia Lighthouse was constructed during the 17th century is one of the oldest monuments and major landmark in the city and from top of the Lighthouse one can come across the striking views of surrounding areas.

 

Museums:

Colonia is surrounded by eight small museums in which 7 museums are located in city and tourists are suppose to buy only one entry ticket to visit all the museums, is the best way to know about the city and colonial buildings in and around the city. Portuguese museum is the oldest museum which was constructed during the 18th century which exhibits the jewelry, uniforms and old maps of Portuguese naval expeditions.
