Bejaia is a port city situated on the Mediterranean coast in the northern part of Algeria. It is the administrative centre of Béjaïa Province. It coordinates with 36°45′ N latitude and 5°04′ E longitude and spans over an area of 120.22 sq. km. Bejaia is located at an altitude of 949 meters, around 230 km east of the national capital, Algiers.

Tourism is the backbone of the Bejaia’s economy well supported by beaches, mountains and cultural centres. The textile and cork industries are the other sources of the economy. Bejaia features a Mediterranean climate with warm and dry summers and cool and wet and mild winters.

 

History of Bejaia:

During the French rule in Algeria, Bejaia was called by the different names like Budschaja, Bugia and Bougie. According to the archeological findings, the Numidian Berbers were the original settlers of Algeria. Saldae was the Roman city of Bejaia, was founded by the emperor Vespasian.

 

How to reach Bejaia?

Bejaia is served by the Soummam – Abane Ramdane Airport with scheduled flight services from Basel/Mulhouse, Lyon, Marseille, Paris, Algiers, Charleroi and seasonal flights from Saint-Etienne. The airport is located around 5 km away from the centre of the city, connected by buses, taxis and minibuses.

The road connectivity of Bejaia extends to Tizi Ouzou, Algiers and many other important northern cities of Algeria.

To move within the city, visitors can bus or rental cars.
