Berat is a small town placed on the banks of the river Osum in Berat district and lies towards the south central part of Albania country. Berat is situated on the slopes of the Tomorr Mountains and pine woods above the town and the town spans an area of 2.4 square miles (6.3 square kilometers) and located at an elevation of 190 feet (58 meters) above the sea level. Economy of Berat is based on leather, metal, silver and silk working and tourism industry, the town is declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Berat is surrounded by Ura Vajgurope, Kucove, Perondi, and Polican towns and Tirana, capital of Albania is located at the distance of 106 kilometers from Berat. Coordinates of Berat are 40.7000° N, 19.9500° E.

 

History of Berat:

Berat was populated since the 6th century by Greek tribes and the region was recognized as Dessaretis. Byzantine Empire captured the region during the collapse of Roman Empire and during the Bulgarians rule the region was identified as the Pulcherioplois and later became one of the prominent towns during the rule in the 9th century. Ottoman Empire captured the region in the year 1417. The modern history of the region began from 18th century and Berat was one of the major Albanian cities and in the year 1835, Greek school was established in the town.

Berat Castle:

Berat Castle is situated on right bank of the river Osum on a pebbly hill and the wall of the castle was reconstructed during the 5th century under the rule of Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II and from top of the castle, one can view the breathtaking surrounding landscapes and valley.

 

St. Mary of Blachernae Church:

St. Mary of Blachernae Church was constructed during the 13th century and mural painting by Nikolloe Onufri can be seen in the church is one of the must visit churches in the town known for its architectural design.

 

Halveti Tekke:

Halveti Tekke is a Muslim religious buildings and landmark of the town constructed during the 15th century and later renovated in the 1782 by Ahmed Kurt Pasha and the mosque has a prayer hall.

 

Tomorri Mountain:

Tomorri Mountain is the main mount in the town which can be reached through four wheelers, top of the mountain is surrounded by pine trees and Bektashi Temple is located here, from top of the mount tourists can see the surrounding landscapes and valley.
