Tokyo History & Meaning:

The word Tokyo is derived from Japanese word “to” meaning east and “kyo” meaning capital when it became the capital city of Japan in the year 1868. Formerly it was called as Edo meaning Estuary and during Meiji Period it was also called as Tokei. Tokyo was under the rule of Meiji Emperors from 1869 A.D. to 1943 A.D.
