Winnipeg derives its name from the Cree word wi-nipe-k means ‘muddy waters’. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, Aboriginal people used Winnipeg as a trading centre. French traders constructed the first fort of Winnipeg in 1738. This region was incorporated as a city in 1873 with name Winnipeg.
