Lashio is situated on the Asian continent in the center of the Myanmar in the Shan State. Lashio is the center of administration for Lashio Township in Lashio district. Lashio district is one of the largest places in Shan State and at the valley of Nam Yao River and Shan Hills, the highest mount is located few kms from the city. Lashio is at a distance of 550 km from the countries capital city, Naypyidaw. The geographical coordinates puts the place at 22⁰56’ N and 97⁰45’ E is located at an elevation of 836 meters (2,746 feet) above the sea level.

Climate in Lashio is warm throughout the year and during summer season the average temperature is 42⁰C and in winter temperature drops to -2⁰C.

History of Lashio:

Before the rule of British the region was under the control of Shan emperor. In the year 1887, British colonial period was started in the town, as it was bounded by mountains and climate was pleasant throughout the year, later in the year 1903, Myanmar Railway line was established from Mandalay to Lashio. Various developments like military ports, civil offices, and military headquarters are established in the town. During Sino-Japanese War, Lashio was captured by Japanese in the year 1942 but later in the year 1945, it was liberated from Japanese.

Lashio is mountainous region and there is not much to see the town but region is home to several ethnic minorities and during the visit tourists can view various colorful dressed minority populaces and populaces of Lashio speak Burmese, Jingpho, Kayah, Karen, Chin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan. Singing and dancing forms an integral part of the town. Majority of the population of Lashio follows Buddhism.
