Kurnool is located on the Indian subcontinent in the Andhra Pradesh state. Kurnool is the headquarters of the Kurnool district. The coordinates of Kurnool are 15.830 N and 78.050 E. Kurnool is 275m above sea level. The place Kurnool spans over an area of 230km2. In the summer season the temperature ranges from 230 C to 370 C and in winter season the temperature ranges from 200 C to 280 C. Kurnool happens to be one of the biggest cities in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Two rivers flow besides Kurnool. These are Tungabhadra and Hundri.

History of Kurnool

In the 17th century, Kurnool was under the rule of the Bijapur Sultans. In 1687, the Moghuls conquered most of the regions of Andhra Pradesh and Kurnool. Nizams were appointed by the ruler of Moghul, Aurangazeb in these regions. With the fall of the Moghul rule. At this time the Nizams appointed by Aurangzeb declared their independent rule in the region.

During the 18th century, Kurnool was under the rule of the Nawabs. The Nawabs formed alliance with the ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan. In the year 1838, the Nawab was defeated by the British East India Company and Kurnool fell into their hands. Kurnool was made the capital under the Madras administration. The year 1947, marked the era of Indian Independence in the Indian history. At that time Kurnool was merged with the state of Tamil Nadu. Later in the year 1953, eleven districts in the northern most part of Madras was merged with the present state of Andhra Pradesh.
