Misrata, also written Misratah and Misurata, is a Libyan city belonging to the Misrata District in the northwestern part of the country. It is geographically positioned at 32°22′39.12″ N 15°05′31.26″ E, around 185 km east of Tripoli, the capital of Libya. Misrata is considered as the commercial capital of Libya and is also the 3rd largest city of Libya in terms of population. Misrata experiences a hot semi-arid climate. Apart from its commercial activities, Misrata is noted for its educational institutions, dominated by the Misrata University.

 

History of Misrata:

The name of Misrata may be derived from the Misrata tribe. According to the historical records, Misrata was founded by the Islamic Caliphate around the 7th century AD. Following the Islamic Caliphate reign, Misrata was continually occupied and ruled by many powerful empires, notably by the Ottomans. Misrata also witnessed the Italians’ rule in its history.

 

How to reach Misrata?

Misrata is home to an international airport that is situated around 12 km southwest of the downtown of Misrata. The Misrata Airport receives flights from Istanbul, Tunis, Benghazi, Casablanca, Monastir, Cairo and Amman.

By road, Misrata connects all the major Northern Libyan cities including Zliten, Tripoli, Benghazi and Sirte.  The city of Misrata has an upgraded road infrastructure, served by minibuses, taxis and rental cars.
