History of Papun:

Pagan Empire ruled Papun in the 11th century. Papun was under the rule of Hanthawaddy Kingdom from the 13th to 16th century. Later on battles were fought to gain supremacy over Kayin State among the neighboring kingdoms which continued till the beginning of the 19th century. In the 18th century, the British landed on Papun soil. From the period 1824 to 1826 the first Anglo-Burmese War was fought. The British triumphed with success and conquered entire Kayin State. In the year 1852, the second Anglo-Burmese War wherein again the British dominated their presence successfully over the entire state. During the Second World War the Japanese forces invaded and conquered the entire state and later the British regained the region and began restoration work.

Mt. Zwegabin

Towering up to 2,372 feet, this limestone mountain has a stupa constructed over it that has a strand of hair belonging to Buddha. From the top of the mountain one can view the breathtaking scenery of the surroundings is visited by thousands of tourists.

 

Kawgun Cave

Myeik is situated in the southern most part of Myanmar in Tanintharyi Region. History of Myeik:

During the 11th century, the entire region of Tanintharyi was ruled by the Pagan Empire. During this period ports were constructed on the coast of Myeik. The year 1287, witnessed the rise of Siamese Kingdom and the fall of the Pagan Empire in Tanintharyi region. During the 16th century, the city witnessed the arrival of European traders at the port. Trade between far away countries began to improve. The city’s economy thrived as trade prospered in the region. In the year 1765, the Burmese defeated the foreign power in Myeik. This event proved strategically important in order to overthrow the ruler of Ayutthaya Kingdom which eventually took place in the year 1767. However the first Anglo-Burmese war was fought in the year 1826 through which the British acquired the Tanintharyi region through a treaty signed by the then Burmese ruler. During the Second World War the Japanese forces invaded Tanintharyi region and took control of the entire area. After the end of the Second World War the British regained control over the entire region. Restoration work began in the region. The year 1948 marked the beginning of Myanmar independence and the end of British rule in the country.

History of Mong Tong:

The Shan rulers were descendants of the Mongols who entered the region in the year 1287. Their reign ended in the year 1555. Mong Tong town too came under the British administration. In the year 1903, at the time of the British rule the Myanmar rail link was extended to Mong Tong connecting the place with Mandalay.
