Njombe is the name of the former district belonged to Iringa Region in the eastern African country, Tanzania. Currently Njombe is divided into two separate districts Njombe Urban District and Njombe Rural District. Now both of these districts are the parts of Njombe Region, Tanzania’s one of the 30 administrative regions. Njombe Rural District is located at 08°51′ S 034°50′ E, while Njombe Urban District coordinates with 09°20′ S latitude and 034°46′ E longitude. The city is surrounded by Mbeya to the west, Iringa to the north and Sonega to the south and is located around 470 km southwest of the national capital, Dodoma and 700 km southwest of Dar es Salaam, the largest city of Tanzania.

 

History of Njombe:

It is believed that, Njombe got its name from the Mdzombe trees, which was larger in population in the area during the German colonial rule. The new Njombe Region was formed in the year 2012 by carving it out from the Iringa region.

 

Conenctivity to Njombe:

There is a small airport in Njombe, probably that doesn’t receive any flights currently. The major closest airport to Njombe is Mbeya Airport, is located around 150 km west of Mbeya and operates flights from/to Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.
