Kinshasa is the capital as well as the largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo geographically positioned at 4°19′30″ S 15°19′20″ E. It is situated on the bank of the Congo River in the opposite of the capital of Congo, Brazzaville. Kinshasa is noted as Africa’s 3rd largest urban area following Cairo and Lagos. Kinshasa is also one of the 11 provinces of DRC, covering a total area of 9,965 sq. km. Kinshasa experiences a tropical wet and dry climate with dry season from June to September and rainy season from October to May.

 

History of Kinshasa:

Originally a group of fishing villages, Kinshasa was established by Henry Morton Stanley during the Belgium colonial rule as a trading post and then it was named Léopoldville after King Leopold II of Belgium. Kinshasa got its current name in 1966 after the independence of the country.
