Eleuthera also spelled as Eleuthra is an island in Bahamas geographically positioned between 25°06′ N latitude and 76°08′ W longitude, about 80 km from Nassau, the capital of Bahamas. It is 110 miles long and 1 mile wide island, covering an area of 518 sq. km. with a maximum altitude of 60 meters.

Eleuthera is known for its classic pineapples and the Pineapple Festival takes place in Gregory Town of the island. Eleuthera is divided into 3 districts such as North Eleuthera, Central Eleuthera and South Eleuthera. The major landmarks in Eleuthera include Glass Window Bridge and Preacher’s Cave.

 

History of Eleuthera:

Eleuthera takes its name from the womankind form of the Greek adjective ‘eleutheros’ means ‘free’.

It is believed that, Taino or Arawaks were the original settlers of Eleuthera, but they were no longer lived and Puritan pilgrims from Bermuda were the first Europeans to visit Eleuthera in 1648.
