Bagan is sited in the center of the country, Myanmar in the Mandalay region. Bagan spans over an area of 104 km2 is located at a distance of 340 km from the capital city, Naypyidaw and the city is renowned for its ancient temples visited by thousands of devotees throughout the year. The geographical coordinates puts the place at 21010’ N and 94052’ E.

 

Climate of Bagan:

Bagan city comes under dry zone of Burma and during summer season the average temperature is 330 C and in winter temperature drops to 200 C.

 

History of Bagan:

The region Bagan witnessed civilization from the second century. From the period 1044 to 1287, the region Bagan became a hub for political, cultural and economical development. Overtime students from Ceylon, India as well as from the Khmer Kingdom began arriving into the city to study in various fields such as science, astronomy, medicine and other fields. Various Buddhism cultures such as Tantric Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism and Theravada Buddhism began to flourish through the region in the 11th century during the rule of the Pagan Empire. The year 1287 witnessed the fall of the Pagan Empire due to the Mongol invasions which lasted till the year 1301. The Mongols plundered and looted the city and the economy of the city collapsed. Under the Myinsaing Kingdom, Bagan became the capital of Burma in the year 1927. During the 15th till the 19th century, the region remained a pilgrimage destination. Thousands of temples were constructed during this era.

Ananda Temple:

Ananda Temple was constructed in the year 1105 by king Kyanzittha of Pagan Dynasty and temple is devoted to Lord Buddha is one of the most renowned and sacred temples in the city.

 

Bupaya Pagoda:

Bupaya Pagoda is situated at the distance of 80 kms from city center on the banks of River Ayeyarwady and was constructed by King Pyusawdi in 850 is one of the notable shrines in the city.

 

Dhammayangyi Temple:

Dhammayangyi Temple is situated at the distance of 85 kms from middle of the city and temple was constructed during 1167 to 1170 by the King Narathu is the largest temple in the city, which is visited by thousands of devotees throughout the year.

 

Thatbyinnyu Temple:

Thatbyinnyu Temple is situated at the distance of 85 kms from center of the city in Old Bagan city and has tallest pagoda measuring 66 meters was constructed in 12th century.

Bagan is well connected via rail links to places in Myanmar and there are regular trains commuting passengers from Bagan railway station to places such as Yangon and Mandalay.

Bagan has well established networks of roadways to places within the country Myanmar. There are Buses available daily to places such as Mandalay, Yangon, etc and vice versa.

Inter city transportation is facilitated by Buses, Ferry and Taxis.
