Tulcan is the capital city of Carchi province in Ecuador covering an area of 344.5 sq. km. located about 220 km northeast of Quito, the capital of Ecuador and 650 km northeast of the largest city of Ecuador, Guayaquil.

Tulcan is situated around 7 km from the Colombian- Ecuadorian border and these two countries are connected by the Rumichaca International Bridge. Tulcan is surrounded by Ipiales in Colombia in the north, Huaca Canton in the south, Esmeraldas towards the west and Sucumbios province in the east.

Tulcan is geographically situated between latitude 0°48′42″ in the north and longitude 77°43′7″ in the west. Tulcan is located at an elevation of 2,950 meters (which is highest in Ecuador).
