Zoetermeer is one of the major cities of the Netherlands located in the South Holland province, around 30 km from Rotterdam, 15 km from The Hague and 55 km southwest of the national capital, Amsterdam. It comes under the Haaglanden conurbation and is the 3rd largest city of the province in terms of population, behind Rotterdam and The Hague.

The literal meaning of Zoetermeer in local language is “Sweet Lake” which may be derived from the former fresh lake in the northern part of the city. Until 1966, Zoetermeer was a small village and its real development began with the housing needs from The Hague people in Zoetermeer.
