Pathien is sited in Asian continent in the center of the country, Myanmar in the Mandalay region. Pathien spans over an area of 104 km2 is located at a distance of 565 km from the countries capital city, Naypyidaw. Pathien is bounded by Arakan Mountains and Inye Lake flows through the region which is known for fishing. The geographical coordinates puts the place at 16046’27” N and 94043’54” E.

 

Climate in Pathien:

Pathien has pleasant weather throughout the year, as it has tropical monsoon climate and during summer season the average temperature is 300C and in winter temperature drops to 180C.

 

History of Pathien:

According to historians, the region Pathien witnessed civilization from the second century. From the period 1044 to 1287, the region Pathien became a hub for political, cultural and economical development. Overtime students from Ceylon, India as well as from the Khmer Kingdom began arriving in the city to study in various fields such as science, astronomy, medicine and other fields. Various Buddhism cultures such as Tantric Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, Theravada Buddhism, began to flourish through the region in the 11th century under the reign of the Pagan Empire. The year 1287 witnessed the fall of the Pagan Empire due to the Mongol invasions which lasted till the year 1301. The Mongols plundered and looted the city of its wealth. The economy of the city collapsed. Under the Myinsaing Kingdom the city became the capital of Burma in the year 1927. During the 15th till the 19th century, the region remained a pilgrimage destination. Thousands of temples were constructed between these periods.

Shwemokhtaw Pagoda:

Shwemokhtaw Pagoda was established by King Ashoka of India in 305 BC and later in the 1115 AD, the Bagan’s King Alaungsithu renovated the stupa to 11 meters in height and in the 1263 AD, King Samodogossa rose to 40 meters in height, at present the Pagoda is 46.6 meters in height and top layer is made up of gold.

 

Mawdin Pagoda:

Mawdin Pagoda is visited only during the lunar month of Tabodwe when festival is organized in the pagoda and regular boat services are available during these months for devotees.
