Frederikshavn is a town located in the North Denmark (Nordjylland) region in Denmark, around 65 km away from the regional capital, Aalborg and 475 km from the national capital, Copenhagen. Frederikshavn is especially noted for its spectacular beaches, marine industries, historical sites and grand cultural festivals.

 

Geography of Frederikshavn:

Frederikshavn lies on the northeast coast of the Jutland peninsula at an elevation of 7 meters, between 57°26′28″ N latitude and 10°32′23″ E longitude.

 

History of Frederikshavn:

Fladstrand was the original name of Frederikshavn that means ‘Flat beach’ and it was upgraded as a merchant town with name Frederikshavn in the honor of King Frederik VI. The literal meaning of Frederikshavn in the local language is ‘Frederik’s harbor’. The Gunpowder Tower (Krudttarnet) is a historical landmark in Frederikshavn, built in 1688.

 

Connectivity to Frederikshavn:

There is no airport in Frederikshavn but Aalborg Airport is not far from Frederikshavn, located around 65 km away. Aalborg Airport handles flights to Amsterdam, Stavanger, Oslo, Istanbul, Copenhagen, London and many other European destinations.

It takes around 90 minutes from Aalborg Airport to Frederikshavn by bus. Frederikshavn can be reached by train from Copenhagen which takes about 5 hours 50 minutes.

Norway and Sweden tourists can use boat to reach Frederikshavn and some major boat operators include Stena Line and Læso Line.

There are bikes available for local travel at free cost at the Tourist Information center. Bus and rental cars are other options to get around.
