Sangli is located in Sangli district in Maharashtra on the banks of river Krishna known as the largest producer of turmeric and has many sugar mills. Sangli has a literacy rate of 77% and Marathi being the widely spoken language of the residents of Sangli. Meaning & History of Sangli:

Sangli is derived from Marathi word “Saha Galli” meaning six lanes. Sangli was found by Harbhat Patwardhan and is also called as Natyapandhari, the original birthplace of Marathi drama. Sangli was a part of Maratha Empire during 18th century and was ruled by Shivaji Maharaj in 1801 and became a part of princely state of British East India Company in the mid 18th century.

Sagareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary:

This is one of the most frequently visited spots in Sangli lying at a distance of 47 kms from the heart of the city. The sanctuary extends to an area of 10.87 sq kms which consists of dense forests and rich in natural vegetation. The wildlife sanctuary is a house to 52 species of endangered animals like wild goats, deers, jackals, blackbucks, cheetal, hyenas, foxes and many species of birds and reptiles.

Ganapati Temple:

This temple was built in the year 1843 and is known as one of the ancient temples located in Sangli located on the banks of river Krishna. The temple attracts many devotees and tourists during Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

Dandoba Hills Forest Preserve:

The Dandoba Hills Forest reserve is a 25 minute drive from Sangli which is rich in flora and fauna and has many historic old temples located atop the hills. The region is ideal for trekking and undertaking long hikes. The place is also well known for conducting mini marathon which is one of the popular events in this part of the town.

Sangmeshwar Temple:

The temple is located at the confluence of two rivers namely Krishna and Warna and is dedicated to lord Shiva who is the main deity of this temple. Many devotees visit the temple during month of Sravan and Mahashivratri festival.

Sangli Fort:

This is one of the ancient fort located in Sangli which also houses a palace and a museum. The Sangli fort attracts many locals as well as foreign tourists all round the year.

Open Jail of Swatantrapur:

This is one of the most well known and ancient open jail situated in Sangli that dates back to British era is visited by many travelers and visitors.

Bridges of Sangli:

Sangli is well known for its bridges that are built across river Krishna during the British regime which is still standing strong. One can have a wonderful view of the river Krishna from the top of the bridge.
