Key West is city in the state of Florida in United States and seat in Monroe County. Key West is situated at an elevation of 5 meters (18 feet) above the sea level and covers an area of 19 square kilometers (7.4 square miles) and divided into four distinct areas. Key West is surrounded by Fleming Key, Sigsbee Park, North Stock Island, Key Heaven, Stock Island, Cow Key, Atlantic Ocean, Marquesas Keys and Sand Key is situated at the distance of 638 miles from the capital of Florida, Tallahassee and coordinates are 24.5592° N, 81.7840° W.

 

History of Key West:

Before the entry of Europeans, the region was occupied by Calusa people and the first European to visit Key West was Juan Ponce de Leon in the year 1521. Cayo Hueso was the name given to the island during the establishment of territory and in the year 1763, Great Britain took the control of Florida and returned to Spanish after 20 years. Matthew C. Perry in the year 1822 claimed the territory for the United States and renamed as Thompson’s Island and later the region was sold to three American officials. Key West was an isolated region until the establishment of overseas railway extension from mainland of Florida to Key West Island in the year 1912. In the year 1982, Key West became independent as Conch Republic.
